Selecting Your Mobile Gear

One of the the hardest parts of podcasting is figuring out what gear to purchase.

I like to be mobile and take my equipment into the field. Also because I live in Philadelphia and don’t drive, it is important to me to be able to take my equipment on public transportation.

This means that it needs to be a compact, lightweight, and easy portable.

Here is a list of the equipment I use in my mobile studio. This is everything you need to store your equipment and record it.

Bag

This backpack is great. I use it to store my Macbook, charger, external hard drive, and my Zhiyun Smooth 4 gimbal. I also hang my headphones from the bag. This means I also have my editing rig wherever I go.

Zoom h6

Audio field recorder. Use this to capture your ambient audio and as a field mixer to capture your audio.

Price: $399.99

Samon Q2U

The Samson Q2U is a dynamic mic with both USB and XLR ports.

It is a solid mic for field recording and is relatively inexpensive.

5 Pack Foam Mic Cover

A five pack of windscreens for your Samson Q2U’s.

Auphonix Pop Filter

Pop filters help prevent plosives in your recordings by breaking up the flow of air.

On-Stage Desktop Mic Stand

These are very sturdy desktop microphone stands that will securely hold your microphones during recording and are highly portable.

Sony MDR7506 Studio Monitors

These are flat frequency response headphones. They are for monitoring your audio while in the field and editing your podcast.

Caseling Hard Case

A hardback case for your Sony MDR’s. They clip onto your eBag backpack and completely protect your headphones.

Casematix Hardback Case

A hardback case with foam to protect your recording equipment. The foam is perforated so you can cut out the parts you need.

Hosa 5ft XLR Cables

These cables are how you deliver the signal from your Samson Q2U’s into your Zoom. You can find cheaper cables out there, but Hosa makes a quality product.

You need to have solid XLR’s to ensure your signal is preserved throughout the chain.

Price: $10.95

Qty: 3

Hosa 1/4 inch TRS to XLR

If you plan to record any live events, you’ll want to have one of these. You can use this cable to record the signal from inside of the soundboard before it is broadcast, preserving the signal.

Price: $13.95

Hosa XLR Male-to-Male adapter

If you’re planning on recording live events and you’re going to be in new environments, I’d highly recommend one of these. It allows you to change the gender of your XLR, which can save your ass in a pinch.

Price: $8.20

Qty: 1

Hosa XLR Female-to-Female

This is the complementary piece to the above changer. Again, if you’re planning on recording live events and you’re going to be in new environments, I’d highly recommend one of these. It allows you to change the gender of your XLR, which can save your ass in a pinch.

Price: $9.95

Zhiyun Smooth 4 Gimbal

This gimbal is compatible with every smartphone on the market today. It is great for documenting your recordings and capturing behind the scenes content for your social feeds.
